It was a busy night again at The Tuesday Table, extra busy for my parents because of spring break falling this week, I had to work extra so they not only had my three kiddos, they also had my sisters new baby to watch while they were preparing dinner for everyone.

The of course still managed to put out an excellent meal of Roasted Chicken and gravy, Baked Beans, Spinach and Mushrooms, Mashed Potatoes and of course, Bread.  Dessert was a spectacular new recipe for Pecan Cheesecake Pie.

But they did have a little help getting it on the table!  One of the tween-age boys that comes has taken to helping mix things or cut bread and was all dressed up for the occasion when I came through the door!  Then our neighborhood chef also arrived in time to carve the chickens, although he was not wearing a button up shirt like the younger assistant.

Surrounding the table we had, 11 adults, 3 tweens, 2-two-year-olds (although neither of them actually sat at the table for more than a few seconds), a one-year-old and a baby.

The kiddos were all playing outside, because it wasn’t pouring rain or snowing for the first time in forever and it was above 40’F outside, so clearly spring weather.

So what does LUT stand for? (Referring to the letters embroidered on my work uniform)

Actually LVT, Licensed Veterinary Technician.  Sort of like the RN of the veterinary world.

So what do you do? What does your job entail?

Well, I am the anesthesiologist, radiologist, pharmacist, doctor-patient-client liaison, receptionist, counselor…..

So you do everything.

Basically, I am not legally allowed to preform surgery, diagnose or prescribe.

But I bet you could.

Most of the time… but the veterinary world doesn’t have a mid-level title like PA in human medicine.

(Everyone shuffles over to the table)

Oh no! I spilled the wine!  How do you get wine out of clothes?

I don’t know, I’ve never spilled wine before.

How do you get wine out?!?

Well, not very easy, I suggest soaking them as soon as you get home…

Spoon? Fork?

Are you going to eat with Mama?

Yes…

*Now, I am holding my two year old with her aquired spoon and fork chit chatting and watching where everyone is going to sit for dinner, when I feel a spoon go across the base of my neck and a fork very lightly poking into me…

Are you cutting me up to eat?

Nom Nom!!

You’re eating me?

YES!!!! (huge giggles as she “cuts” another piece)

There’s another bottle of wine in the fridge can you pull it out after you get your picture?

Well that was a suspicious look.

I thought so too, glad I wasn’t the only one who saw it!

Oh! A bottle of wine for us!  Lets just park that here!

I just noticed you were wearing your scrubs, very professional.

NOO!  I just got that out of my head from a few weeks ago because of him!

Meanwhile the kids have abandoned their plates and are running amok through the house and outside and are either moving through the rooms like a herd of elephants or being suspiciously quite in turns.

Conversation also turned to my early academic years and how I did not attend a few well known schools and opportunities even though I was offered scholarships… mostly because I was young and stubborn.  We also talked about different medicinal values of different things for different purposes, as suggested I am editing that out, to keep this as non-controversial as possible!

Is that dessert?  K, everyone, dinner is over!  Have a nice night, no dessert tonight!

Next week, it hasn’t cured yet, its taking a little longer than the others, I think the alcohol does weird things.  I didn’t know wine could burn, but it can.

Dessert was a big winner all around, determined to be better than regular pecan pie because the tartness from the cream cheese cut the sweetness just enough.  Two successful  new recipes tonight!  The one year old got to open her birthday card and things started to wind down.  All the kids were rounded up, toys picked up and shuffled home for school the next day.

Those who don’t have little kids and thought they would stay and have more wine, had their plans spoiled by me, who decided to try and change a light bulb after I got home and managed to get a piece of glass in my eye.  This resulted in an emergency call to our family paramedic (Dad, even though he isn’t really a paramedic he is the best!) because if he couldn’t get it out, then we would need someone to watch the kids.  He wasn’t able to find the glass, but I did find it and all is well with my eye, sans trip to the E.R.!
